Thought Leadership Case Study

EC-PR Quote marksRuth Fain, ITPE“EC-PR never fails to deliver. Their approach to thought leadership, both in terms of crystallising our initial ideas and then drafting good quality content, is second to none. Given how time-poor our subject matter experts are when it comes to PR, it was a breath of fresh air to have the EC-PR team support us and deliver some great coverage in our target media. We’re looking forward to our next campaign to continue improving our share of voice on key net zero and ESG issues.”

Ruth Fain, Associate Director, ITPEnergised

Dangers and Desires

Previous to the thought leadership work, we had partnered with ITPEnergised in helping them to define a communication strategy. The team there are marketing-savvy and understand that brand-building work doesn’t stop once the strategy is in place — in fact, that’s only the beginning.

The next leg of the journey

ITPEnergised knew that to increase awareness amongst their target audiences and, in turn, fill their sales funnel, they needed to embark on an earned media campaign.

Drawing on the key messages established in the communication strategy, this campaign would take the form of a thought leadership programme. The challenge was that ITPEnergised’s subject matter experts were time poor, and existing relationships with trade media were very limited and needed to be nurtured.

To the rescue

With a 100% performance guarantee of securing thought leadership coverage and over two decades of experience in working with its target trade media, ITPEnergised turned once again to EC-PR.

Design

Our task was to secure and generate thought leadership content attributed to ITPEnergised’s experts, while keeping the onus off them in terms of demands on their time.

The approach we took to achieve this involved EC-PR shouldering as much of the responsibility as possible, while only requesting the client’s time when it was absolutely necessary, such as at the points of information-gathering and final approval.

Campaign delivery

  •   Brilliant ideas bank
  •   Securing media stories
  •   Interviewing subject experts
  •   Authoring content

Brilliant ideas bank

Our approach was to facilitate the creation of a Brilliant Ideas Bank in collaboration with ITPEnergised’s subject matter experts. The Brilliant Ideas Bank is a repository of seed ideas designed to capture the media’s interest. Critically, the topics strategically aligned with the communication strategy, showcasing ITPEnergised’s level of expertise on net zero and addressing the key pain points their target audience faced.

Securing media stories

Once these ideas were compiled and agreed, we began the roll-out of the earned media campaign programme. This saw us pitching articles to target journalists and liaising with them to ensure their specifications were met.

Interviewing subject experts

We arranged interviews with the subject matter experts at times convenient to them. The interviews were pre-arranged with top-line questions submitted in advance to give the interviewees maximum time to prepare, while minimising the impact the campaign would have on their day-to-day role.

For optimal time efficiency, interviews were recorded, allowing us to refer back to them when writing up the articles.

Authoring content

Our team of accomplished technical writers saved the client time and hassle by authoring the content on their behalf, and subject to their approval. The process of generating the articles was therefore streamlined and made simple, keeping the time required from the subject experts to a minimum and allowing them to focus on their main jobs.

Distinction

100% of the thought leadership article ideas we pitched resulted in secured coverage.

As a result, ITPEnergised’s thought leadership coverage on net zero appeared in top-tier and highly targeted media including:

Client praise

ITPEnergised were highly complimentary about our work, commenting specifically on how easy it was to deal with us and how reassured they were that we could deliver such a high quality of service and level of coverage, without relying heavily on their people’s time.

Our strategy paved the way for ITPEnergised to increase its share of voice, which it achieved during the execution stage of the campaign, when the company’s experts started to become recognised as highly respected thought leaders in their field.

ITPEnergised is now preparing for a follow-up wave of activity, designed to further cement their position as experts in their industry.

BMT is a maritime-orientated high-end design house and technical consulting firm driven by a passion for solving complex, real-world problems.

Their ‘Highly Autonomous Warship Technologies’ (HAWT) offers a vision for the future of increasingly autonomous naval operations, underpinned by safe, secure and lean-crewed warships.

BMT Group

BMT Case Study

EC-PR Quote marks“DSEI was a significant event for BMT in launching our highly autonomous warship concept, providing a key platform for us to lay out our vision into how the complexities of transitioning to naval autonomy could be navigated. We know we have the ability to offer insightful counsel to address this complex challenge, and we know this is grounded in our efforts to work with navies and industry to get under the skin of these challenges to help resolve them. Our challenge was in communicating this to the market, and the results we achieved and continue to enjoy as a result of outreach around DSEI have proven to be invaluable in raising BMT’s profile in this space.

“The results of this campaign allowed BMT to not only reach our target audiences at and around the show, it has turned a four-day event into an ongoing campaign of proactive media interest that continues to this day, delivering value that far surpasses the original objectives of the launch campaign.

“Thanks to the brilliant efforts of the EC-PR team, the paper has gone from strength to strength with over six magazine headlines and four front cover articles.”

Jake Rigby

Research & Development Lead, BMT

The company has conducted extensive research in collaboration with navies, government and defence technology institutions to develop and capture a deeper level of understanding of the roadmap for the integration of AI and automation in naval operations.

Dangers and Desires

To fully harness their work, BMT wanted to launch its new HAWT to the defence market, and saw DSEI — one of the most important events in the defence industry calendar — as the ideal opportunity to do it.

The challenge of achieving this aim was not to be underestimated. DSEI is a very well-attended event, showcasing over 1,000 defence and security suppliers from 58 different countries. On top of that, while BMT had a strong pedigree in naval ship design, awareness of the company’s offering in the defence market was inconsistent.

Our media connections and stakeholder engagement experience, coupled with our deep knowledge of the defence and technology sectors, meant we were ideally placed to take on the challenge of positioning BMT as experts in naval autonomy.

Design

Our main objectives included releasing a new insight paper, and achieving media coverage in top-tier publications.

According to BMT’s brief, we centred our activity around the DSEI event. In targeting DSEI to launch the concept and insight paper, we faced a large, crowded, global event where the incumbent players largely dominate the news cycle.

 Campaign goals

  1. Increase BMT’s visibility within the defence sector
  2. Amplify their presence at DSEI
  3. Establish a dominant share of voice in the key areas of naval autonomy.

Our approach

  • Launch a media outreach programme to top-tier defence trade media outlets
  • Secure thought leadership articles
  • Exploit opportunities afforded by the release of the insight paper.

Deliverables

  • Press releases
  • Press interviews
  • Social media content
  • Journalist liaison

Sustainability

We engaged with journalists before, during and after DSEI to ensure BMT had a substantial share of voice in key media titles over a sustained period.

Article placements

100% of the articles placed were in tier-one target media. Coverage included four front cover articles.

Media coverage included:

We secured interviews for BMT with journalists before DSEI and at the event, achieving a strong and authoritative voice on naval autonomy even within a crowded news cycle.

Coverage from the launch of the insight paper was secured during the show and featured as one of Shephard Media’s top stories in its ‘show daily’ on the first day of the event.

Distinction

Through ongoing engagement with the media after DSEI, we have successfully sustained the media’s interest in BMT and the company’s insights into naval operations. BMT is now considered a recognised authority on the subject and its share of voice on naval autonomy continues to grow.

What started out as a launch opportunity for BMT to highlight its understanding of naval requirements, turned into a springboard for continued PR growth, which went way beyond the original challenge.

BMT’s key differentiator is their research and critical insight. They always knew this. Thanks to our strategic media and thought leadership campaign, now their target industry knows it too.

We now feel a sense of empowerment, and it has renewed passion and pride in what makes the ITPEnergised brand so special.”

Jonny Clark

Managing Director, ITPEnergised

Dangers and Desires

At the helm of ITPEnergised is Jonny Clark, an ambitious and visionary Managing Director focused on business growth. Jonny recognised that to achieve his business growth goals, certain aspects of the business required immediate attention.

The absence of a clear communication strategy meant there was a lack of consistency when it came to communicating with the target audience. The organisation had no clear line on how it differentiated itself from competitors, nor on why customers should care whether they worked with ITPEnergised or someone else.

Jonny chose to work with EC-PR because of our experience and track record in building marketing strategies and providing companies with a blueprint for how to achieve marketing and communications success.

Design

Developing a communication strategy means starting at the beginning and addressing the key questions surrounding the personality of the brand and how it wants to be perceived by the target audience.

A collaborative approach was needed here, with our role being facilitator. We proposed a fact-finding, research-led route to discover the values that lay at the heart of the company.

Campaign delivery

  • Messaging Lab workshops
  • Communication strategy
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Validation research

Messaging lab workshop

The first step to building the new communication strategy for ITPEnergised was to hold Messaging Lab workshops. In these sessions, we worked closely with the organisation’s senior leadership team to discover how they viewed the company, what they felt the key differentiators were and who they saw as their main target customers.

Communication strategy

The resulting communication strategy featured five key components:

The value proposition

This inspired ITPEnergised to recall what drove them from the start. In working with them to refine their value proposition, we helped them create a simple statement that defined them as a company and differentiated them from competitors.

Target customer personas

Companies can get lost in the everyday melee, forgetting which kind of customer it is that brings them the greatest return, in terms of profitability and satisfaction. Through this exercise, ITPEnergised was able to define which type of customers they really wanted to focus their energies on attracting.

Positioning statements

The next stage on from defining target customer personas was to create a positioning statement bespoke to each one. This addressed the key pain points the customer typically experienced and explained how the company could offer solutions and reassurance to ease this pain.

Key messaging

Ensuring they were reflective of their positioning statements, we worked with ITPEnergised’s senior team to agree on their key messaging — what it was they wanted their customers to understand about them. This information fed into the communication strategy, providing angles for narrative.

Industry prioritisation

Like every business, ITPEnergised did not have endless marketing budgets. This meant they needed to drill down on the industries most important to them. Doing this gave them direction in where to focus their attention when it came to marketing activity.

Validation research

Engaging external stakeholders is an important aspect of building a communication strategy. That’s why we conducted validation research amongst a small group of ITPEnergised’s customers — to ensure the strategy was in line with their perceptions.

Distinction

The communication strategy we built now forms the backbone of all ITPEnergised’s marketing activity. It offers clarity and guidance on communication and gives the company a clear way forward, providing a much-needed structure that was previously lacking.

Much more than just a comms strategy

ITPEnergised’s Managing Director commented that thanks to EC-PR’s support, the organisation has been given a renewed sense of empowerment and pride in what makes their brand so special.

From our point of view, it was a privilege to be involved in a project with a company whose work is so important to the world we live in and we’re delighted we could make such a positive difference to how they view themselves.

Seequent

Seequent Case Study

EC-PR Quote marks“The roundtable and insight paper by EC-PR provided a platform for Seequent to share a clear message on effective data management with an important and influential audience. Working with EC-PR has allowed us to increase our share of voice in a new market. We grew our audience and engagement through an impactful thought leadership content strategy.”

Jessica Nussbaumer, Segment Marketing Manager, Exploration and Production, Seequent

Knowing the software would deliver exceptional value to its target audience, Seequent hoped to raise awareness amongst IM mining companies.
Here’s how EC-PR increased Seequent’s share of voice in a new market and grew audience engagement through impactful thought leadership and content strategy.

Dangers and Desires

Seequent’s USP and offering are best suited to supporting IM companies with challenges caused by digital transformation. While companies grasp the need to integrate technological advances as soon as possible, doing so across geographically dispersed teams with an extensive practical element can be a headache.

To remediate the headache, Seequent offers digital tools, fit for purpose, that are cost effective and resource efficient. Plus, the company supports IM entities during the digital transitioning. Confident with its strong offering of proven solutions, Seequent began looking to expand its visibility and grow its market share in IM mining.

Seequent approached EC-PR in 2021 to build its brand.

Design

Seequent first tasked EC-PR with generating engagement among key target stakeholders and influencers. Aiming to build the organization’s profile in the niche mining sector, EC-PR proposed a strategic approach.

The plan started with a light-touch communication strategy and a Media Lens competitive media analysis. Together, these initiatives enabled EC-PR to develop compelling ideas on which to build the campaign narrative.

Strategy design

  • Thought leadership articles
  • Press interviews
  • An insight paper
  • Media relations with key media outlets
  • An expert roundtable

Expert roundtable

EC-PR proposed a roundtable to focus on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) themes and digital transformation. Initially, outreach conducted ensured the roundtable would effectively target key stakeholders because, without expert participation, the roundtable would not draw decision-makers who are true prospects for Seequel.

Having secured a star-studded panel including Colin Church, CEO of the IOM3 trade body, Leah Wilson, VP of Corporate Social Responsibility at Imerys, Rainer Westerman, Lhoist’s Group Geology and Mining Director, Liv Carroll, Managing Director and Applied Intelligence Mining Lead at Accenture, and Craig Guthrie, Editor of top tier trade press title Mining Magazine — Seequel was ready to launch its ESG Roundtable.

Insight paper

Following the roundtable, EC-PR developed an insight paper to capture the key discussion points from the event. This was then circulated to IM mining stakeholders and leaders in the industry. We hosted both the roundtable and paper on Seequent’s website.

Subsequently, we promoted the insights from the roundtable and insight paper via a sustained campaign on LinkedIn, supported by engagement from industry influencers, the company leadership team. We, of course, ensured that press contacts of EC-PR’s helped boost its reach.

Article placements

EC-PR secured several by-line article placements for Seequent in leading global IM trade media titles. These included AT Mineral Processing, Global Mining Review, IOM3’s Materials World and Mining Review Africa, giving the software brand an authoritative voice on ESG and digital transformation amongst global IM readership.

Article coverage lasted for twelve months, providing continued opportunities to share the thought leadership across social and digital media to maintain Seequent’s share of voice for at least a calendar year.

Distinction

As a result of the roundtable and insight paper, Seequent achieved ongoing engagement with influential experts and commentators in the IM sector. Content from the event continued to generate conversation in the months following the roundtable, with commentators sharing content across their digital channels.

Online engagement for the roundtable and the paper also achieved significant reach, with the roundtable posted as a live webinar on LinkedIn, attracting over 300 registrations. Simultaneously, the insight paper achieved more than 300 downloads.

In conjunction with the roundtable and paper, supported by a comprehensive thought leadership programme, Seequent’s brand visibility skyrocketed. The software brand now holds an expanded influential network within Industrial Minerals.

Actionable Intelligence and Insight

Established in 1985, they deliver design and engineering excellence to the energy, transport and defence sectors.

BMT Group

BMT Case Study

EC-PR Quote marks“The project was invaluable, both in terms of intelligence gathering and as a means to rapidly establishing relationships with the senior operators within the group.”

Jenni Williamson

Head of Marketing – Corporate Support, BMT Group

Dangers and Desires

BMT has over 1300 professionals, located across 27 offices in the Americas, Asia, Australia and Europe. Building strong relationships with its directors at sub level is key to delivering the high-quality and innovative solutions that BMT is renowned for. Although crucial to the firm’s success, engaging with BMT’s subsidiaries can be time-consuming and challenging.

As part of refining and improving its global PR strategy, BMT’s Group Marketing Team wanted to strengthen relationships with BMT’s subsidiary directors and improve communication channels.

Here’s how EC-PR engaged BMT’s key stakeholders and helped to build collaborative interactions across teams.

Design

Identifying and understanding market nuances in each country presents many challenges for BMT’s Group Marketing Team and can make all the difference to the success or failure of a campaign.

The team wanted to create more collaborative connections with its subsidiaries that would successfully set and manage expectations while helping to build better interactions in future.

EC-PR’s proven success in developing multi-national global PR strategies meant we were well equipped to deliver BMT’s objectives. We proposed a solution that would engage BMT’s subsidiaries and help to refine marketing activity in each region, while maintaining global brand consistency.

Campaign delivery

  • Identified core objectives.
  • Developed a structured fact-finding programme.
  • Organised recorded interviews with key stakeholders.
  • Collated and reported key findings

Structured fact-finding

Working closely with BMT’s Group Marketing Team, we devised a series of questions for subsidiary representatives designed to extract relevant information, spark ideas and gather market insight that was previously unattainable or lacked substance.

Recorded interviews

Key to gathering the required data and intelligence was communicating effectively with subsidiaries.

Face-to-face communication has proven to be more effective when compared to written or audio-only conversations, allowing for nonverbal cues to be picked up and understood.

According to Forbes, face-to-face interactions are also 34 times more effective than alternative forms of communication, helping to reduce misunderstandings and create more collaborative conversations.

With these compelling reasons in mind, EC-PR recommended engaging with BMT’s 35 subsidiary MDs and Senior Group Executives, including Sector and Regional Directors, as well as BMT’s FD and Group Chairman through a series of face-to-face recorded interviews.

This enabled EC-PR to successfully gather the intelligence and information needed to hone BMT’s PR strategy at a global and regional level and identify key findings from each subsidiary quickly and with maximum engagement.

Collation of key findings

Following the completion of each interview, EC-PR collated all information in a format that clearly defined each subsidiary’s key requirements and highlighted critical factors affecting potential outcomes.

Distinction

As a result of our work, BMT’s Group Marketing Team was quickly able to uncover invaluable information that has helped to improve the success of its PR campaigns globally and rapidly develop relationships with its key stakeholders across all 23 subsidiaries.

Interactions with subsidiary teams are now more frequent, allowing the Group Marketing Team to gather intelligence and be notified of country-specific developments without delay.
